the "videoconferencewith supreme master ching hai: sos: save the planet," held on march 6, 2009in xalapa, mexico. good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, we wholeheartdly welcomeall the honorable guests and respected attendees to this great conference entitled, "sos: save the planet." today, we focuson a very relevant issue

which is a threatfor all life on earth: climate changeand global warming. what exactly would global warming doto our planet? it could cause the extinctionof the human race as we know it. as the heat increases, fresh water would be lostfrom a third of the world's surface; human beings would die of heatstroke; stressed plants would emit carbon instead of absorbing it,

super-hurricanes, flooded coastlines, shortage of foodon a global scale, just to name a few. how can we stop global warming? that is whatthis videoconference, sos: save the planet, will focus on today. this evening is especially precious because supreme master ching hai -

a world renowned humanitarian, artist, and spiritual teacher - is joining usas the guest of honor. after over twenty yearsof sharing her wisdom and deep insights, traveling to every corner of the globe to share the messageof how to live a fulfilling life, supreme master ching hai continues to dedicate her timeand efforts to uplift and enhancethe life of all beings. we would like to thank everyone

for putting asidesome of your valuable time to join usfor this critical conference. some of the distinguished guests today include: honorablefidel herrera beltran, governorof the state of veracruz; also his honordavid velasco chedraui, mayor of xalapa city; nominjin, one of the most famoussinger-songwriters

in mongolia; and many other distinguished guestswho are present here today. thank you. we also have great personagesfrom abroad who have sent their greetingsto supreme master ching hai and shared their concernsabout climate change. we will play their messages later on during our videoconference. welcome, everyone!

we are very happy and honoredto have all of you here with us today to discuss an important issuethat impacts all of us, wherever we may be in the world. this historic event isbeing broadcast live globally on supreme master televisionvia 14 satellites, as well as on the website and through the local station, oliva radio on 95.5 fm, whom we thankfor their great generosity. we are very lucky

to have a beautiful planet like earthto call home. earth provides us unconditionally with an abundanceof food like fruits, nuts, leafy greens, and vegetables. earth provides us with loyaland loving companionship from our animal friends who entrust to us their lives, and would sacrifice theirs for us

in the blink of an eye, without hesitation. in an appreciation of our earth,of our friends - human and animal alike, and all forms of life - the talented singer-songwriter nominjin will delight uswith the song "gracias a la vida" (thanks to life) nominjin has arrived

from the beautiful countryof mongolia to lend her support to the sos: save the planetvideoconference. let us give hera big round of applause! welcome! hallo, everyone. this next song is called"gracias a la vida" and i dedicate it to all of you. thanks to life, which has given me so much.

it gave me two beams of light, that when opened, can perfectly distinguish black from white and in the sky above, her starry backdrop, and amidst the multitude the one that i love.

it gave me an ear that, with all of its range, takes it all in - night and day - crickets and canaries, hammers and turbines and barking and storms, and the tender voice of my beloved.

sound and the alphabet. with them the words that i think and declare: "mother," "friend," "brother" and the shining light. the route of the soul of the one i love. it gave me the ability

to walk with my tired feet. with them i have traversed cities and puddles beaches and deserts, mountains and plains. and your house, your street and your patio. it gave me a heart that causes my frame to shudder,

when i see the fruits of the human brain, when i see good so far removed from bad, when i see within the depth of your clear eyes... it gave me laughter and it gave me longing.

with them i distinguish happiness and pain - the two substances from which my songs are formed, and your song, as well, which is the same song. and everyone's song which is also my own song. thanks to life.

thank you so much to nominjin for this beautifuland moving song. indeed, it is thanks to life, that we are all here. and we havethis invaluable opportunity to raise our consciousnessabout the current state of our planet. this is our chanceto do something to protect the planet and protect the precious lifeof all beings. our earth is agonizing.

scientific research has confirmed that global warming is causedby human activities, due mainly to the lackof knowledge of the harmful effectson the environment. environmental pollution, the rising of global temperatures, the melting of the glaciers, floods and droughts, earthquakes, seaquakes,

volcanic eruptionsthat happen unexpectedly, forest fires, lack of food, hunger, disease and plagues - all of them are related - the extinctionof species of flora and fauna, and the birthof a new kind of refugees, climate refugees. that's right.

in this beautiful state of veracruz, we have seena lot of natural disasters. we know that floods are more frequentand stronger. we see it on television, we watch it on the news, we listen to it on the radio; and the suffering is indescribable. ladies and gentlemen,

supreme master ching haiis joining us today as our guest of honor. let's welcome supreme masterwith a warm round of applause. hallo, hallo! hallo, how are you? hallo, master. welcome to xalapa city. hallo. thank you. welcome to xalapa city, master.

we feel so honored that you are here with us todaydespite your extremely busy schedule. thank you so much for spendingsome of your valuable time to join us today for the sos: save the planetclimate change videoconference. thank you, master. it's all right, it's all right. thank you for inviting me. thank you, mexico.

thank you, mexicans. master. we'd like tolet you know that we have a very special guest today. it is the honorable governorof veracruz state. wow. thank you for coming.thank you. thank him so much. our special guest has just arrived, the governor of veracruz state, mr. fidel herrera beltran. thank you, governor,

for joining usfor this special conference. welcome, sir, welcome. thank you, governor. thank you for coming. welcome, mr. governor. next, we have our guest speaker david velasco chedraui. he is the mayor of xalapa city. please give hima grand round of applause.

good afternoon,mr. fidel herrera beltran, governor of the state of veracruz; supreme master ching hai, world renowned philanthropist, artist and spiritual guide; mrs. mariana munguia de velasco, president of xalapa's municipal dif; invited artist from the association; civil protection secretaryof the state, mr. victor alvarado,

coordinator of the program"tu decides" (you decide) with the state's dif. welcome to all. good afternoon. i gladly greetsupreme master ching hai and i thank her,as well as her association, for inviting us to thisextremely important videoconference on an issuethat is a top priority to us all. for xalapa, it is an honorto welcome all the special guests

who are with us today. but, above all,to be able to greet many people, given that through the internetwe are connected to the whole world. the work that is being done by the supreme master ching haiassociation is of great assistance to the peoplewho need it the most. this has been shownthrough the support given to many mexicans

that have been left homelessby natural phenomena. most recently, to our veracrucian brotherswho were affected by the floods at the end of last year. this is a humanitarianand altruistic effort that we recognizeand profusely give thanks for. for a few years, we've been hearing a termthat has made us rethink the causes, but above all,

the consequencesthat we are creating on our planet. i am talking about global warming and climate change. this is the main challenge we face as humanity. the effects and consequencesof this phenomenon are more than evident, and we are witnessing themgrow in frequency and intensity.

for example, the weather in xalapa has changed over the last years. we can no longer seeas often the dense fog that was so characteristic. it is beyond discussion that the world's climateis totally changing and it is a threat. on one hand, we are witnessingthe worst droughts in history,

but on the other hand, devastating floodswith fatal consequences. this is our world nowand we have to save it. among the main reasonsfor these phenomena, we have the accelerated and uncontrolled growthof the cities; unrestrained tree felling and the lackof orderly urban planning; the nonexistence of plansand environment programs;

and a real lack of controlregarding gases that we releaseinto the atmosphere. these causes areeveryone's responsibility but, at the same time, we all have the solutionin our hands and in our actions every day. our commitmentas a government is to achieve the protectionof all our surroundings to ensure our futureand present generations,

a clean and healthy environment where they can livein peace and harmony with their planet. to achieve this challenge,we must all work together, building teams to create a cultureof environmental protection for the general population. we must do this by applying a visionof environmental sustainability. in xalapa, we are doing our part.

among the main actionswe have taken are: the signingof the municipal agreement for the rescue, cleaningand conservation of the cedeno river, with 9 municipalities of the region;the deposit of 500,000 pesos to the waters, forestsand basin trust fund for the rescue and conservationof the pixquiac river; the rescue and recoveryof several bodies of water such as the casablanca pondand the zona de los lagos (lake zone);

reforestation programs such as "mi arbol y yo"(my tree and i), and the decoration of the entire city with typical native flowersof the region; environmental education and ecological consciousnessconferences, mainly in schools; participation in the development of the conservationand management program

for cofre de perote national park; as well as intensive recycling programsand refuse separation such as the batteryrecollection program we did with the diario de xalapa and the salvemos al agua(save the water) foundation. we recognize that the measures implemented so far, though effective and hopeful, are very slow, which is why we need toincrease the efforts to gain more ecological consciousness.

we are determined to follow the pathlaid out by our governor fidel herrera beltran, whose great environmental vision has resulted in veracruzbeing the first state in the country with an action planagainst climate change. thank you, mr. governor. thank you, thank you.thank you very much. we still have important challengesto address. that is why the xalapa government takes on the commitmentof working from various fronts:

respect towards all ecosystems, all natural resourcesand living beings on earth; generate a true ecologicaland environmental consciousness in the population; consume less energyand use environment-friendly materials; administer resources for environmental projects;carbon credits; call for a great ecological crusadeto combat global warming. i invite you to be a part

of this great ecological crusade, one in which we must all participate with the goal of preserving, taking care of, and protecting our natural resources to attain an environmentthat is totally clean, healthy and sustainable. it is a social commitmentthat we must all assume. we must do itfor the sake of our planet and for the future of our families. friends, the planet, and nature are alerting us.

we have to listen to them and act todayfor a better tomorrow. xalapa, veracruz, mexico and the whole worldneed a fresh course, and we are going to give it to them, all of us united and together. thank you very much. thank you.thank you for your great speech, mr. velasco chedraui.(thank you.) why are there climate refugees?

let's watch the videoon submerged islands and the fate of the victims. this is one calamity which we do not want to happento our planet on a massive scale. as the climate continues to warm, entire islands are sinkingbelow rising waters caused from melting glaciers. indeed there are many island nationswho are doomed already now,

condemned, to disappear. therefore there is no questionthat we have to act. and that is just the beginningof the visible impact of climate change. the invisible part, the bitsthat we have not necessarily understood that are happening around usare also on their way. we have whole communities, having to be relocated, villages which have been thereover a decade maybe a century and now they have to be relocated,

and where they've being livingfor the last few decades is no longer there. it has been eroded. it's not their wish to go, but because of the situation; it's forcing them to move. we may be at the point of no return; our small low lying islandswill be submerged. it's an issue of human survival.

if the world community, the different countriesdon't kick the carbon habits, there will be other countriesnext on the line. according to the scientists, there could bemore than just one disaster. rising sea level isnot the only worrying event, disease will also rise. they already do soin some parts of the world. change to a more benevolent lifestylethat is respecting all lives,

then we will beget life and our lives be spared. and nature will restore the balance and repair all damage. i wish to see that day soon,in my lifetime. the more vegetarian peoplejoin the circle, the more chance we haveto save the planet. for our next segment, we have several overseas personageswho sent their greetings

and shared with us their concernfor the state of our planet. we have, first, a messagefrom ms. chiu chin tien. she's a legislatorin formosa (taiwan). she's also the chairperson of the yilan branch of formosa (taiwan)environmental protection union. for over 30 years, ms. chiu chin tien isactively involved in the protectionof the environment.

and she is associated with majorenvironmental protection groups and alliances. global warming is a common problem that the entire human race is facing. if everyone recognizes this, i believe every government willmake it their first priority to solve this problem. all development and investmentshould consider this first. so, i've been appealingto our government

to take notice of it. together with the current financialand economic crisis, i think it's a chance from godfor us human beings to reevaluate our actions. the experience of global warming,as well as the financial crisis, is telling us that our long-time economic activitiesin the past are actually wrong, and against nature. we, human beings, need to change.

as a legislator, i monitor whether the formosan(taiwanese) government's strategies to tackle the financial crisiscan also help to solve and reduce the crisisof global warming. we need to carefully considerif every step and investment of governmentcan help our future generations, and identifywhich industries are sustainable for the bettermentof future generations. thinking this way,

you will naturally considerthe carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutral impact before you do anythingand before spending any penny. in fact, i always believe that the first country or governmentto consider this in their actions will be the first country or governmentto recover from the economic crisis. then, it will lead othersto step into the next era. i really hope we can help each other.

the livestock industry has emitteda lot of greenhouse gases. i also understand how human beings' economic activitieshave affected our world. i believe thatfacing the global warming crisis, we, human beings, eventually, need totake into consideration whether the food we eat is increasing or reducingcarbon dioxide levels. if you love your children,

this is the best you can do. i believe all parents will do it first. i believe thatthe number of vegetarians will gradually become morethan that of non-vegetarians. through internationalor even intercontinental cooperation, we, human beings, are finding a way to live a low-carbon life. with this meeting,i deeply hope that, instead of spending funds and energyon hatred and war against each other,

every nation should work together to help each otherto save ourselves, to save the planet, and to save our childrenof the future. i am here to give all my best wishesto supreme master ching hai, our mexican friends, and all the audiencesin front of the television. let's work hard together. every one of us is responsiblefor the disaster,

so each one of ushas the obligation to solve it. through cooperation,we shall overcome this crisis, and we can bring a new happinessto our children and the children of the future. from the islands nationof the philippines, we have a messagefrom senator heherson alvarez who is alsothe presidential advisor on global warmingand climate change. hallo, supreme master ching hai.

i would like to congratulate you.(hallo!) and thank you for your many humanitarian effortsin helping disaster victims. and this time around, i must really congratulate you for bringing togethermany parts of humanity - mexicans, filipinos, formosans (taiwanese) - in great distancesof parts of the world so that we can confrontthis disaster of global warming

you are a great humanist, master ching hai. and i wish to greet everybodywho's here in mexico for this struggleto understand global warming climate change is that pointwhere we would reach an irreversible warming of the temperatureof the world to 2 degrees centigrade above thatof the pre-industrial revolution, before we started to use machines. and because the world has heated up

by 2 degrees centigrademean temperature, all of the icein the polar regions, the 3 mile glacieron top of greenland, will melt. and when they melt, we will have reachedthe tipping point or the irreversible pointof climate change. because the ice would melt, then there is more water in the world. the oceans will riseby 7 or even 9 meters. the scientists point out to us

much of the surface of the earthwill then be flooded. but global warming iseven more serious to many countries, especially to the poor countriesof the world, the archipelagicand low lying small island nations. in the philippines alone, we get about 20 storms every year. before global warming, the storms were travelling at the velocityof about 90 to 140 km/hr.

we could survive themeven if we have 20 storms. but now, one storm alone hit usin one of our southern islands and it has flooded the island, killed many people. it traveled at the velocityof 240 km/hr. one great stormof about 300 km/hr hit new orleans. it wiped outthat beautiful american city. we must unite. members of the family of manmust look for a formula or program

or a timetableof cutting carbon dioxide. we ask the developed countries,we all ask the countries of the world to look at this problemin all its totality. and together, like brothers and sisters, let us protectthe future generations of man. let us work together nowand save the planet, and it helpsif you are a vegetarian. and i'm sure thatnot only the vegetarians will join us on thisbut anyone who cares for mankind,

anyone who lovesthe future generation of humanity. thank you, senator. we are very honoredto have the support of the vice presidentof the european parliament from the united kingdom, mr. edward mcmillan-scott. in light of the critical stateof our planet, mr. mcmillan-scott becomes part of the solution to save our planet earthby reducing his consumption of meat.

let us watchhis greeting message. my name isedward mcmillan-scott. i am a vice presidentof the european parliament. i come from the united kingdom. i am very interestedin the proposition that we should eat no meatone day a week. in actual fact, i have been doing that myselfsince christmas. i think there's a serious messageand that is that

the planet is in trouble. we have a problemwith greenhouse gases. one of the most significant sourcesof greenhouse gases is animal production, and meat production, and the dairy industry, and the fact thatso much soy is now being grown as animal fodder. for all these reasons,

the united nations, in particular, but also other organizations, have encouraged peopleto give up meat at least one day a week and, therefore, i am delighted that the movement is endorsingand supporting this proposition. i am delighted that i am here and able to delivera message of greeting from the european parliamentto supreme master ching hai,

whose work is well understoodaround the world and, in particular, at a time of concernabout climate change that this message is being propagated and encouragedby supreme master tv, which is an important mechanismof communication around the world. and as a vice president, we have been discussinghow, for example, the european parliament itselfreduces its own footprint.

and one of the proposals i have madeis in line with your own, which is thatwe should eat far less meat because that is one of themajor sources of greenhouse gases. i am also delighted thatsupreme master ching hai is conducting an interactivequestion and answer session. and this isa very important medium now. people need tobe able to get a response from both politicians and public figures, spiritual leaders.

and so, i am delighted thatthis is now being made possible through the mediumof supreme master tv. so, good luck with the projectand may many others imitate it. so, in all these areas, the european union is in a capacityto give a political lead and i believe it̢۪s doing so. thank you, sir. wonderful.(thank you, master.) thank you so muchfor your support.

we would like to expressour thanks to european parliamentvice president mr. mcmillan-scott, senator heherson alvarez, and legislator chiu chin tien for supportingour sos: save the planet videoconference to bring awareness to the urgencyof the climate change crisis. yes, we thank them so much.

i'm very grateful. i'm very grateful to the vice presidentof the european union. i'm very deeply grateful. may god bless you, sir! your support is really a great, great, great grace to us, great blessing. may god bless youand the european union,

and bless our worldso that we may survive. we need more people like you. god bless you! buddha bless you! the production of meatthrough the raising of livestock is proven by numerous studies that it's harming our planet. in 2006, the un released a report

called "livestock's long shadow"which revealed that the raising of livestockfor human meat consumption is the number one emitterof greenhouse gases - methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide - and a major contributorto global warming. let us watch the next videoin which supreme master ching hai, our guest of honor today, talks about it.

i am very gratefulto courageous leaders in the world for stepping out of their boundary and to speak outfor the sake of everyone. even if the publicdoes not appreciate their goodwill, heaven will take note. and they will havea great reward hereafter. it is, of course, very difficultto be in the position of authority. to be a leader isto be endowed with bravery, compassion and nobility.

that's why you are a leader. it's not easy, of course,to be in the position of a leader. that's why leaders are few, yeah? you see, in a nation, there's only one king, one queen, some princess, some prince, one president, one prime minister.

very few leaders compared to the multitudeof this world. but fewer evenstill are brave leaders, courageous leaders, righteous leaders and wise leaders. to such a wiseand courageous one, we offer full support and respect. we pray thatheaven give them more strength,

more wisdomto carry out their noble duty. because as i told you, leaders are few. and fewer still are thosewho are wise and courageous. being a leader, we must knowwhat is good for our subjects and what is not. and what is good, we have to encourage them to do, facilitate them to do.

and what is bad, we have to stop, to protect them. that is the true meaning of a leader. all the informationabout harmful meat diet and beneficial vegetarian lifestyle, just print them out,put it in your pocket, and wherever you go,just give it to people. it doesn't take time, not much money, even if it does, please do sacrifice

to save the planetif you still want to live here. and also to save the animalsthat you so much love. and to save our peoplewho are not aware of the bad consequencesof a meat diet. it's our duty to do that, we cannot do it all alone; we can also save some people, but we cannot save allif we do not have your help. please, do help usto help everyone.

thank you so much. thank you, master, for your message. thank you for helping. we are privilegedto introduce to you the very loving and compassionatesupreme master ching hai. supreme master ching haiis a world renowned humanitarian, spiritual teacher, artist and the #1 bestselling authorof the books "the birds in my life,"

"the dogs in my life," and "the noble wilds," which are availableat www.amazon.com. motivated by her unconditional love and overflowing compassion for our planet and its co-inhabitants,humans and animals alike, supreme master ching haiselflessly accepts invitations to share her perspective on the topic of global warming

we are very fortunate that she has acceptedto join us in this conference, sos: save the planet, i just want to say "happy birthday" to our governorof the state of veracruz. tomorrow.but tomorrow i won't see him. so, is that okayto say it one day earlier? yes. is that okay,mr. governor, to say happy birthday?

happy birthday tomorrow, sir. happy birthday to you, governor.it's tomorrow. happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. happy birthday, dear governor. happy birthday to you! it's tomorrow, but we are wishing youhappy birthday today. thank you.thank you, sir. master, would you like to sharesome of your thoughts

about the current state of our planet, the impact of climate change and how can we stop it? almost everyone knows thatour planet is in trouble, and we just have to remind each otherto do something about it because our days are numbered. and i'm really glad thatsome of the governmental bodies, the religious bodies, and social bodies and educational bodies,

and many other organizationsare doing their best to inform the publicof the dire state of our planet, and also inform themof the solution. like "be veg, go green." vegetarianism or veganism isthe best solution. and that is really"love in action". not only love for the animalsbut truly love for our planet and our children, the future generation. love should be translated into action.

if we truly love our family,we should do something about it. and at this momentof our planet's dangerous state, the solution is to be vegan, meaning no more animal products or no more animal foodon our plate. peace and love begins on our table, begins on our plate, our dinner, our breakfast, our lunch. "love" is just an abstract word, but "love" can be an action. so, if we do love our children, we do something.

and now that we know thatthe vegan diet will save the world for our future generation, i do ask everyoneto sacrifice their palette, the taste, the habit, which is very detrimentalto our health anyway. please go on the internetand do more research about how harmfulthe animal diet will do to ourselves and our children. please do more research

on how beneficiala vegetarian diet can be. please do research. nowadays, we can research everythingon the planet. meat is not our friend. animal products arenot our benefactor; they are our enemy. first, they harm our health and that of our children. and second, but most important,

they harm our planet. so, please, do research and please do sacrifice this habit. cut off this habitof animals' products. and then we can have everything else, even cars to drive, even airplane, even ships, even boats, even everythingthat we're having right now,

because nothing is as harmfulas animals' product. if we just leavethe animals products alone, then we have absolutelyeverything else. that is 99.9% of everythingthat we have right now, minus meat. by meat, i mean fish, eggs, milk, etc, etc. even milk is harmful. it's responsiblefor many fatal diseases. meat and milk, dairy products and eggs are #1 cancer causing,

#1 fatal disease causing. millions of people die every year because of meat, eggs, and dairy products. trillions and trillionsof us dollars are spent in this directionto try to cure those diseases that have been causedby meat, dairy, and eggs. so please, for the sake of your health and that of your children, and of our planet,

and that of the futureof our security and survival, please, just leave the animals alone. then everything else will be fine. and then everything else we will haveand the planet will heal herself, and we will haveeven a better life afterward. and we havean even better planet afterward. that is my promise. thank you so much, and if you have any questions,

and if i know of it,i'll be glad to answer you. may god bless mexico. may god bless our world. thanks for listening. bravo! thank you, master, for sharing with us such invaluable insight. next, please welcome the honorablefidel herrera beltran,

the governorof the state of veracruz. please give a warm round of applauseto welcome the honorable governor of the state of veracruz. welcome, mr. herrera beltran. let me, at the beginning, say a few words in englishto express our deepest gratitude to supreme master ching hai for sharing with us, the veracruz people,on behalf of the mexicans,

a common and very deep and profound feeling. we love our planet, and we, in veracruz, have decided to take care of our water,of our soil, of our skies, and do everythingthat is within our reach to save our planet. this is the only planetwe all have. there is no any other.

that is why we backwhat you do, master, and that is why we are all here,to learn and raise consciousness within our people, our children, our women and men. to save our planet is startingfrom saving our veracruz! that's right.starting from home. the planet is our home,

and as our homewe must treat it with care, we must preserve it and protect it. we should make use of our natural resources responsibly;that's what humankind must do. to save the planet isto save ourselves; it is to save the lifeof all sentient beings. correct. to save the planet means, then, to work together -

governments and people - for life and for the future. today, the challengeof global warming is severe and without precedent. we know it ourselves in veracruzfor we have survived many hurricanes and natural disasters. the state of veracruz has already started doing its work, with the help of the british embassy that has given monetary resources,

and we have establisheda climate action plan for the state of veracruz. this is going to be a model plan for all the statesof the mexican republic. the objective is to be consciousabout what to do as a government and as members of society for a responsible leadershipwhich restores natural conditions to reforest; to treat the water;

to plant trees; to recycleand separate organic waste from non-organic;to care about people's food and recommendthe appropriate diet to put an endto a great public health problem that veracruz has, which is, first of all, thatof obese and overweight children under 10 years oldin the school system. overweight. yes, yes.

the population also hasa very severe problem. they sufferabout double the rate of diabetes compared to the restof the country. therefore, we have subscribedto the human genome research and we have organizedan international gathering on climate changeand public policies on april 27, 28 and 29of this year, with the attendance of institutions and renowned scientistsfrom around the whole world

and at whichthe university of veracruz and teachers unions, like the national educationlabor union, which is lending ustheir building today, are a very important part. and columbia universityin the united states will work with us. issues such as the onewe call the abc initiative which, translated into english, would be the initiative for water,

woods, and river basins, are a very important partof our effort. a is water, in english which is "agua" in spanish; b is for "bosques"which, in english, is woods; and c is "cuencas" which, in english, would be river basins. we are working on this and, at the same time,we are protecting our ramsar sites.

at the same time we do that,we protect our ramsar sites, those are the natural areas protected according to the internationalconvention of ramsar that takes the nameof the iranian city where the united nations decidedto take care of the planet. that is for wetlandsand for biosphere. veracruz is the state that has the greatest biodiversityin mexico, in flora and fauna,

and we practicea great culture of respect and preservation and restoration that comes to us very profoundlyfrom our ancestors, the indigenous people - the huastecs, totonacasand olmecs - our indigenous peoplewho loved their habitat and environment. but we are responsible with nature

because that comesfrom very long ago in our roots, our founding fathers: the indians of the north of veracruz, huastecs; the ones in the middle of the state, totonacas - those are the flyers; and the ones in the south, the olmecs. all of them loved nature, loved their land, loved their culture,

loved their religion, and were basically vegetarians. at the rootof our indigenous cultures is corn. according to the popol vuh, in the beginning, everything was corn. in our long ago times, everything was with nature. (yes.) the food our indians atewere natural food, (right.)

and basically they were vegetarians.(that's right.) popol vuh, our ancient book from the mayas, said, "in the beginning of human life,everything was made out of corn. corn was life." (yes.) maize, tortillas and chiliis the basic diet of the indian population. and you don't see indianssuffering from cancer or losing their hair;

they are healthy. there is a great reasonbehind our decision to care for nature. (bravo, bravo!) let me say at the end - it looks like everyone hereunderstands english, don't you? so i do not take my time - my final words are, master, to say, i believeon behalf of everyone here

and all of thosewho live in xalapa, in the state of veracruz, in mexico, in latin america, that we back your efforts. we encourage youto keep going the same you have been doing, and to back the kyoto protocol, to take all possible action togetherwith the political concern

and the political backingthat you have been building. with that, i say: thank you, master.keep going. and let us help youto save our planet. we will do it together. bravo, governor, bravo. bravo, mexico. bravo, veracruz. i feel very happy.

thank you for your support. and i wish the conference, the future conferencethat takes place, a lot, a lot of success. i wish you success, also in your job as the governor. thank you.thank you so much. thank you, governor, for that wonderful speech. wonderful speech. master, once again, thank you.

thank you for being herewith us today as our guest of honor and taking timeto answer our questions. (yes.) we have a sessionof questions and answers. we will begin now. the first four questions comefrom dr. judy cano, a nutritionist who has given seminarson the importance of vegetarianism. welcome. welcome. greetings, master.

the marine flora and faunaare disappearing because of the oil contaminationin seas and oceans. what can we doto stop this in mexico and the world? hallo, dr. cano.(hallo, master.) i'm sorry, it's not only oilbut other of our actions as well, such as overfishing and chemical run-offfrom farms and factories. these all cause harm,

because they do not considerthe impact of our actions on other beings. for example, you are surely awareof the so-called "dead-zones" in the gulf of mexico, a very large area of waterthat no longer supports any marine life. that is why they are called"dead-zones." these waters have been contaminatedto such an extent that no life can exist anymore there. the contamination came primarily

by the livestock industry'schemical fertilizers which get washedinto the mississippi river in the united states. and thenfrom the mississippi river water, it flows downinto the gulf of mexico. activities such as overfishingof the sardines even also worsen the problemof the dead-zones. scientists have found thatthese very small fish even, very small fish,

play a vital partin restoring oxygen to the water, which is necessaryto support other life forms. so, every being on earthand in the sea has value, no matter how small they might look, and something unique to doon this planet. it is our ignoring of this balanceand the preciousness of all lives that has contributedto our global danger right now, both in mexicoand in other places in the world. the way to solve this problem is

through greater considerationfor all life. this meanswe should respect all lives, and in action. the vegetarian diet, the animal-free dietand lifestyle is the translation of that respect to all lives, thus, to our livesbecause we are all interconnected. vegetarianism, or veganism, is the quickest wayto correct the imbalance.

if everyone is vegetarian, better still vegan, i mean animal-free,having an animal-free diet, then there is a different outlook, different conceptionfor development of all kinds. in our case, it will proceedwith compassion and care, which is what we needto reverse the effects that you mentioned, dr. cano, which is to restorethe wonders of our marine life.

thank you, ma'am. go green. you tell us thatbeing vegetarian would help to stop global warming very quickly and to a high degree. how can vegetarianism do this? dr. cano, you probably are well aware that the livestock raising, means animals raising, emits the greenhouse gas of methane,

the most of it. and this gas isup to 72 times more potent than carbon dioxide, but it also dissipatesmuch more quickly than carbon dioxide -means co2. so, the vegetarian diet, the vegan diet, the animal-free diet, is one way to physically and quickly reversethe greenhouse gases

that are damaging our planet because it will causean immediate cooling effect. the other way that vegetarianism quicklystops global warming is by reversing the mental attitude, the conception that has resultedin so much destruction to our environment. first of all, we stop the suffering

caused to animalsin killing them for meat. by changing to considerationand kindness, this will addressthe deeper cause of global warming which is the violent karma. karma meansthe cause and effect. in the bible it is stated, "as you sow, so shall you reap." the cause and effect principleis scientific and very precise.

if we nourish life, we also can have lifeand happiness. if we destroy life, then we cannot expect health, long life, and happiness in return. every action causes a reaction, and like attracts like. so, if we respect life,we will have life. so, we must stop causing sufferingand loss of life to the animal kingdom.

this is truly why vegetarianism is the quickest wayto stop global warming, it is that like attracts like. it is very scientific. if we give life,we will beget life. everybody knows thatvegetarian diet is good for health and to save the planet. they will be awakeningtheir own great, compassionate, loving, self-nature.

and then their levelof consciousness will rise up automatically. and they will understand morethan they ever did. and they will be closer to heaventhan what they are right now. in mexico, the news has spread about new depositsthat have been found, new and rich oil deposits. this would turn mexicointo the third oil world power. what can we doto stop this pollution from oil

which is destroying our planet? dr. cano, oil is not the worst. so, although we don't wantoil to continue, we can have oil even. we can have oil,if that helps the mexicans to become more prosperous and self-dependent, self-sustained, because oil is not the worst thing.

oil is not the only thingand is not the worst thing that damages our planet. it is the livestock industry. it's actually the most polluting, the most disease producing, the most energy consuming and the most greenhouse gas emittingindustry that exists. the united nations report called "livestock's long shadow"states that

the farm animal industry emitsmore greenhouse gases than all the transportationon earth combined. and accordingto the nobel prize-winning dr. rajendra pachauri, chairman of the inter-governmentalpanel on climate change, who himself is a vegetarian,he said, "meat productionis extremely carbon intensive." this ispartly because of the pollution cycles, including refrigeration,

transportation, etc. not to mention destroying the forestfor grazing land, for pasture land. and all the costs, all the carbon emitting from disease causingand curing etc., etc. that's why i said, "just leave the meat aloneand we have everything else." even oil is fine.

even oil, if we have itwe can use it until we have something betterfor our planet. but if we stop the animal raising, stop animal products, then we cut a big percentage,80% of pollution to our planet, and stop 80% of global warming. so, we can continue tohave oil and cars. i know people will be surprisedhearing me saying this but, no, it is true like that.

because we have not inventedenough instruments for transportation and other uses, so we may continue to use the oilif we have it. of course, the betterif we don't use, but at the moment we must use it. and if we just leave all the meat, animal production alone, then we can use anything. and mexico can make useof this advantage of oil

to elevate the standard of livingof the people. so, what i say is: stop the meat production which will bring great benefitto the environment of your country. since mexico is also involvedin the livestock industry there is alsosustainable resource development as an alternative to oil as well,if we have it quick enough. you see, your country already has begun this with a large wind energy projectnear the city of la ventosa,

which i understandmeans "the windy". sustainable energy, in general,is also showing itself to be very profitable and job producing to people. so, there can be both economicand environmental benefit from developing sustainable energy. and the earth will be protected. but animals industry is the number one enemy

of our survival. thank you, madam. ... reduce your meat consumption or stop eating meat totally. during discussionson greenhouse gas reduction goals, the climate committeeof the european parliament officially recognized livestock'scontribution to global warming and recommended a reductionof subsidies to the livestock industry to curb in methane.

my name is jens holm. i'm a memberof the european parliament. please, be veg, go green, save the planet! now, the next 3 questions arefrom jose antonio lopez, a history professor. welcome! welcome, mr. jose antonio lopez.thank you.

welcome, professor. hallo. hallo, dear master, good evening. (good evening.) i would like toask three questions. we have received your advice about what we should doto save our planet. one of them isto be vegetarian. what advice would you give to people for them to remain sincerewithin themselves

and to keep being vegetarians? professor lopez, thank you for your concern. to be vegetarian is one of the highest formsof sincerity and love. if we love ourselves, if we love our families and our future children, future generation, our children, grandchildren,

great-great- grandchildren, then we should do everything we canto protect them. just to sacrifice the meat dietis not difficult. so, it is a reflectionof human compassion and integrityto offer the same dignity and respect for life to the animals as we have for ourselves. being vegetarian, meaning consumingan absolutely animal-free diet,

gives us also the freedomof conscience, a peace of mind that comes from living in peacewith other beings and nature, which is the original lifestyleof all mexicans, i believe, according to history. this is the kind of peacethe planet needs to survive. remind them of the ancient incas, the ancient mayas, which our governorhas just told us that,

in the beginning, they lived on corn and other vegetables. and they did not have any cancer or any other problems. so we should learnfrom our ancestry. remind people of that. thank you, professor lopez. the next question:do you believe that during this processof the climate change crisis,

people's level will be uplifted and the global consciousnessabout vegetarianism will speed up? professor, it already has. it already has, professor lopez. some people have already changedin their understanding and actions. that is what we are trying to do in spreading the wordabout global warming and the vegetarian solution.

it's to helpmore and more people become aware thatthis is really the most important step in stopping the destructive changeson the earth. it's just thatwe're running out of time. if the governmentand the media help to encourage peopleto become vegetarian, this is ideal because they reachthe largest number of people that we, a small group, could otherwise not reach, but who would also willingly follow

because the people are good people. especially if they knowit will benefit themselves, their childrenand the future generation and to save the planet for our survival. the more peoplebecome vegetarian, the easierfor the environment to be restored. so, yes, there isa certain momentum that can happenwhen many people turn

in the direction of the more caringand compassionate lifestyle. if humanity does not respectother forms of life, then the life of humanswill also be in peril, because we areall interconnected. we all depend on each otherto survive, down to the little worm that makes our land arable. but if people turn away from killing, and choose the animal-free lifestyle, they will harvest

from the seedsof peace and kindness. we pray thatenough people do so, and quickly,as we are running out of time. thank you, professor. good question. (thank you, master.) good question.
